Educational Background

Torr has a robust educational background. He holds a First Class Honours degree in Sports Science. Additionally, he earned a Master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning. In 2012, he decided to specialize as a climbing coach, and shortly thereafter, he partnered with Tom Randall to form Lattice Training.

From Gymnastics to the Crag

Before finding his home on the rock, Torr was a competitive junior gymnast. This background provided him with a unique physiological foundation—exceptional core strength, body awareness, and a deep understanding of “loaded” movement. When he discovered climbing, these traits allowed him to progress at a staggering pace.

.Climbing Achievements

Throughout his climbing career, Torr has reached impressive milestones. He has bouldered up to 8B and sport climbed up to 8c. Furthermore, he has served on the coaching staff for the Great Britain National Climbing Team.

Coaching Philosophy

At Lattice Training, Torr tailors training programs to meet the needs of individual climbers. He incorporates insights from behavioral science and performance psychology to enhance training outcomes.

What set Torr apart from his contemporaries was his refusal to rely solely on anecdotal training methods. Instead, he pioneered the use of data-driven assessments. By analyzing thousands of data points from climbers of all levels, Torr and the Lattice team developed the “Lattice Board” and various finger strength protocols that are now industry standards. His coaching philosophy centers on the idea that “safety comes through strength” and that every climber’s project requires a personalized, scientific approach rather than a “one-size-fits-all” solution.

Coaching the Elite

His reputation has led him to work with the upper echelon of the sport. Torr has coached the Great Britain National Climbing Team and worked with athletes projecting world-class grades like 9b (5.15b) and 9A (V17). He is frequently consulted on the specific preparation required for Olympic-level competition, often discussing advanced concepts like “training holes” and “super-compensation”—the process of pushing an athlete to their absolute limit before a strategic taper to reach peak performance.

Ollie Torr has also contributed to various podcasts and articles. He discusses climbing techniques, training methodologies, and the psychological aspects of performance. His work not only influences elite athletes but also aids recreational climbers in improving their skills
